Shocking Incident at Anfield: Fan Arrested After Racial Abuse Toward Semenyo, Who Hit Back With Stunning Brace
Merseyside Police have arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool after Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during his side’s 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Friday night.
Police confirmed that the suspect’s identity was verified, he was removed from the stadium, and he was taken into custody for questioning. The Premier League and Merseyside Police have both launched investigations.
Game Halted After Abuse Report
The Premier League opener was briefly stopped in the first half when referee Anthony Taylor responded to Semenyo’s complaint. But the 24-year-old answered in the best possible way on the pitch—scoring twice in the second half as Bournemouth fought back from two goals down before Liverpool sealed the win.
Semenyo Speaks Out
On Saturday, Semenyo thanked the wider football community for its support.
“Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever—not because of one person’s words, but because of how the football family stood together,” he wrote on social media.
He praised his Bournemouth teammates, Liverpool players, and fans, as well as the Premier League officials for handling the situation professionally.
“Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch,” Semenyo added. “The overwhelming messages of support remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.”
Liverpool Condemns Racism
Van Dijk: “It’s a Disgrace”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk didn’t mince his words, calling the abuse “an absolute disgrace.”
“These things shouldn’t happen in football—or anywhere in the world,” Van Dijk said after the game. “The only way forward is to educate the next generation. Campaigns alone haven’t been enough to wipe it out.”
He added that he had spoken with Semenyo directly and assured him of full support.
“I am here for Antoine whenever he needs it, and as a club, we will make sure he gets all the backing required,” Van Dijk said.
Despite the ugly incident, Semenyo’s brace turned the spotlight back on football itself—a reminder, as he put it, of “the only language that truly matters on the pitch.”
